Pepper Skis the Rocky Mountains

Jason Pepper SkiingJason Pepper recently took on the challenge of skiing and an opportunity for self-development at the 20th National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.  The event took place April 2-7 in Snowmass Village, Colorado.  Established in 1987, the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic is the largest annual rehabilitation event of its kind in the world.  It is co-sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Pepper was among nearly 350 U.S. military veterans from 40 states who gathered in Snowmass Village to learn or improve their skills in adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and snowboarding.  The Clinic promotes rehabilitation by teaching downhill and cross-country skiing to veterans with significant physical or visual impairments.  It also offers a variety of adaptive activities and sports for Pepper to take part in, including scuba diving, rock climbing, sled hockey, snowmobiling and self-defense.  Fifty-seven veterans recently injured in Iraq and Afghanistan participated in the Clinic this year.

Pepper skied downhill using specially adapted ski devices and methods.  "I have looked forward to learning to ski again," said Pepper.  "This experience has given me the inner peace of knowing that I can still do the things I loved before my injuries.  I look forward to sharing my experience with others, and letting them know how much it helped me realize that life doesn't stop after an injury."
