Before an exuberant, patriotic crowd of approximately 1,000, Building Homes for Heroes welcomed home Army Sergeant Joel Tavera and family to their spectacular new home in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, November 19.
The event, which attracted high-ranking military personnel, including Army General Peter Chiarelli, Navy Admiral William McRaven, Army Major General Robert Abrams, Air Force Major General (Ret.) David Scott, Army Brigadier General Darryl Williams, Air Force Brigadier General Chip Diehl, and Gary Littrell (Congressional Medal of Honor recipient - US Army), all of whom attended specifically to pay tribute to Joel's extraordinary bravery, began with a magnificent procession along the flag-lined streets of New Tampa that stepped off from the James A. Spectacular Homecoming for Brendan Marrocco!
Just two years after losing all four limbs while fighting for our country in Iraq, Building Homes for Heroes and The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, along with approximately 500 supporters, welcomed home Army Specialist Brendan Marrocco! Specialist Marrocco is the first quadruple amputee to survive the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. The state of the art home, located on Staten Island, NY, is a maintenance-free, high-tech residence equipped with an elevator, sensors that operate the lighting, and electronic controls that raise and lower the sink, stove, and kitchen shelves. The entry doors are remote and the lighting is operated by sensors. Specialist Marrocco is the first of four severely wounded veterans who will have new homes built by Building Homes for Heroes in 2011.

Veterans Day skaters raise $4,500
On Veterans Day 2011, a patriotic event "Skating for a Hero" was held at Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park, Long Island. The event, which was hosted and carried out by Ken, Debbie, James, Michael and Nicole McGuigan, drew hundreds of ice skaters and raised $4,500. Proceeds will be earmarked toward a major renovation of the home of USMC First Lieutenant James Byler of Huntington. Building Homes for Heroes would like to thank the McGuigan family, all of the staff at Superior Ice Rink (especially Nancy and Mark), Ellen Muller for baking, Anna Marjanovic and Amelia Cusack for baking and selling cupcakes, and Good People's Farms in Huntington for donating fruit and veggies.

7th Annual LI Golf Outing raises $82,000
The 7th Annual Building Homes for Heroes Golf Classic was held at the Rockville Links Club on the 11th of October. One hundred fifty-two golfers took to the course on a spectacular fall day! The event was a tremendous success, raising nearly $82,000 for the severely wounded men and women of the military. Special thanks goes out to the golf outing's planning committee. The event, which led to a feature on News 12 Long Island, took on exceptional proportions largely in part to the hard work and perseverance of Jim Adelis, Bob Amabile, Bob Carpenter, and Jim Hayhurst. Also instrumental in making the outing a huge success were our volunteers, especially Jennifer Jordano and Blanca Pinedo.

Minnesota event raises over $14,000
In recognition of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, a wine-tasting event was held at the Holiday Inn in St. Cloud, Minnesota on September 11, 2011. The event, which was hosted by John and A.J. Kern, raised over $14,000 for Building Homes for Heroes, which will go toward assisting the severely-wounded men and women of the military. It was a warm gathering of more than 100 from the great state of Minnesota, who set out to honor the memory of the lives lost on 9/11, and all those who volunteer to serve our country. U.S. Senate candidate Dan "Doc" Severson, and State Representatives King Banaian and Steve Gottwalt, gave outstanding tributes. St. Cloud Mayor Dave Klies also attended and supported the event...

Durango Bike Rally
The City of Durango (Colorado) once again hosted its annual hot rod and motorcycle parade on Sunday, September 4, 2011, in conjunction with Ignacio Bike Week rally and the Sugar Pine Ranch rally.. The rally spreads across the Four Corners region. For the second straight year Durango Party Rental sponsored the Veterans Benefit Burrito Breakfast in downtown Durango. The proceeds from the Veterans Benefit Burrito Breakfast were donated to Building Homes for Heroes. The event includes a veteran's dedication ceremony, a blessing of the bikes by tribal chief, a display of classic cars and hot rods, and a thunderous parade of hot rods and motorcycles. The event raised $3,500 to support the severely-wounded men and women of the military. Special thanks to Jon Sigillito and B.J. Jackson for making the day a tremendous success.

Bowling For Heroes
Building Homes for Heroes 1st Annual Bowling for Heroes fundraiser took place on Tuesday, August 23rd at Colonial Lanes in Orlando, Florida from 7pm to 10pm. This fun filled night raised over $9000 to benefit the severely wounded men and women of the military, more specifically the ongoing Robert Jackson "BJ" project. The event included two rounds of bowling, dinner, drinks and amazing gourmet cupcakes from Cupcake Jubilee. Raffle prizes to various restaurants, attractions and services within Orlando were handed out every thirty minutes until the bowling games were completed...

Casino Night
Building Homes for Heroes Inaugural Casino & Cigar Night took place on Thursday, June 30th at Battery Gardens Restaurant in New York City. The event, which raised over $35,000 to benefit the severely wounded men and women of the military, was held on a picture-perfect evening that included a cocktail hour, buffet, DJ, cigars (donated by Camacho Cigars), and fabulous prizes. Approximately 140 people attended the event including television/movie celebrities Tony Sirico, Dominic Chianese, and Tony LoBianco, and former NHL great Ken Daneyko...

Evanchik Family Golf Outing Sets NJ Golf Record!
On May 16, 2011, Building Homes for Heroes held its 4th Annual New Jersey golf outing at the Battleground Country Club in Manalapan, NJ. The event was a record-breaker, raising $75,000 to support the severely wounded men and women of the military. Among those in attendance were Sergeant Mary Herrera – Arizona Army National Guard, Army Staff Sergeant William Castillo, Army Sergeant Joel Tavera, and Specialist Robert Jackson – Iowa Army National Guard, who attended with his wife Abby and daughters Brilynn and Hailey. Each veteran shared their inspirational story with attendees during the event.

Huntington Hits a Home Run!
Building Homes for Heroes would like to thank the Huntington Tri-Village Little League for its tremendous support of the wounded men and women of the military over Memorial Day weekend. The organization welcomed home USMC First Lieutenant James Byler and raised $12,500 which will assist efforts to carry out the major renovation of his home in Huntington. Special thanks to Wayne and Janet Jeno and all of those associated with the Tri-Village Little League for their tremendous support, and to Councilman Mark Mayoka, Marin Brosniak, Michael Gedacht and Carol Rocco from the Town of Huntington. |

PCL Construction Helps Severely Wounded Soldiers
Building Homes for Heroes would like to thank PCL Construction for its extremely generous donation of $10,000 to support the building of a new home for Sgt. Joel Tavera in Tampa Florida. In addition, PCL is currently involved in the planning stage for a new home for Army Specialist B.J. Jackson, his wife Abby, and their six children in Orlando, Florida. PCL Construction is the 6th largest general contracting organization in North America. The organization was recently named 2010 ABC Excellence in Construction Project of the Year Award Winner for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando! Hillsborough County Fire Deparment Donates $7,000
On March 26, 2011, the Hillsborough County Firefighters Local 2294 and Hillsborough Firefighters Benevolent Relief Fund hosted a golf tournament at Emerald Greens Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Florida with all proceeds to going to support the effort to build a home for Army Sergeant Joel Tavera. The event was a tremendous success. Building Homes for Heroes was presented a check for $7,000! Tijuana Flats Makes a Huge Difference
…in the lives of those who return home with severe injuries. Through their Just In Queso Foundation, Tijuana Flats made an amazing $46,417 donation to Building Homes For Heroes! The money raised was used to help purchase and re-remodel a new home for Staff Sgt. William Castillo, his wife Katherine and their four children. The money will also be used to build a brand new home for Sergeant Joel Tavera in Tampa. Joel Tavera was once considered the second most severely wounded soldier to return home. Joel spent nearly three years in recovery at Brooke Army Hospital and the Tampa Polytrauma Center.

Army Sergeant Joel Tavera Groundbreaking
Ground was broken March 25 for a home in the Grand Hampton community for the severely injured Iraq war veteran who turned 24 the day before the ceremony. Building Homes for Heroes has partnered with William Ryan Homes to lead the effort to build a new home for Sgt. Tavera and family. In addition, PCL Civil Constructors, Inc, Tijuana Flats, John Madison Landscaping, and the Hillsborough Fire Fighters are generous supporters of this cause. The Tavera family will be the recipient of a new specially-designed Tampa Bay home. Please help us honor Sgt Tavera by joining us at the events
